Day 34: Lavernock

There was no hurry this morning but we woke early anyway. We just didn't get going early.

Late morning, we walked to the village of Llangynidr, a 20 minute walk down quiet country lanes.

The highlight was crossing the narrow stone bridge over the river Usk.

After our walk, we began the drive to Lavernock. First we had to drive over the bridge above. Did I mention it was narrow? It was only 2.1m wide and the system of lights to warn you when someone was coming the other way were broken.

We took a B road over the Brecon Beacons. We stopped at a viewpoint near the top where we could see our cottage in the distance.

From here the road crossed the open moorland of Mynydd Llangatwg where we saw both sheep (lots of sheep) and Welsh Mountain Ponies.

We had been keen to get to Lavernock today as there was a big gathering of relatives. Malcolm was there with several of his clan and Jean was there as well. I made sure I stayed outside and downwind of them all although Dave took a little convincing that I was serious and I had to back away from him several times. It was a shame I couldn't hug and greet everyone more closely but I didn't want to give any of them Covid.

It was a beautiful day with a good view over the Bristol Channel, Flat Holm and Steep Holm to Western-super-mare.

But we weren't there for the view but rather for the family and we spent a long afternoon chatting away.

In particular, Liz, Linda and I spent an hour with Malc, listening to his stories of family history and growing up.

After the McCann clan left, we stayed on for a dinner of leftovers and stroopwafels. We then said our final goodbyes and headed back to our cottage in the Brecon Beacons.
